Who loves it?

I mean, sure, it smells like raunch on a stick, but it tastes so nasty delicious! My cat loves it too.

Sadly, few are the brave souls who will kiss a cuttlefish eater.

I also enjoy the Pucca, fish shaped pretzels with chocolate fillings...there are also the koala bear ones.

Also, yummy is the Ramune Soda....the bottles are tbe best.

i rarely eat them these days , but on occasions i would bringe a whole packet of 20-25 plums, considering they cost $1.50 a packet

there like dried plums pips with a little fresh on them...really sour and have a distinct red powder that turns your hands red
they have medicinal properties...

I just realized that most of the threads are either Japanese and Chinese snacks.

I just had to mentioned this 'cause I like my snacks spicy.

OMG -- I just went to get this snack called Navrattan. Here's a picture of what it looks like: http://www.indojin.com/shop-online/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=32&osCsid=1916708f16909f7fa5194cec53257eac

Not sure if they're bad for you but they're so damn good!!

And, Kheer [rice pudding] -- oh, my that's some good stuff too!!

of course not together! LOL!
i've been addicted to fried fish from taiwan, comes in a can that is red and has some blue waves on it...it just sais 'fried fish'!

i've tried another variety of this in a bag, but the red can with the waves is imo the best!

also, in pursuit of a warm cereal i discovered instant black sesame/black bean cereal...you add water, stirr and it's sweet and very yummy..also quite warming.

TOn-ton candy

anyone else heard of this ? made from a dough, and mixed with a sweet bean paste and then rolled into a "snake" of sorts then cut up into tiny pieces and rolled in powdered sugar. It comes from the kawasaki area, if my memory serves, but I could be mistaken. It gets its name from the distinctive noise thats made when the butcher knife hits the cutting board. When i was in tokyo, all the vendors had stores that faced each other. as they prepared the candy, they all seemed to be linked to a sort of "psychic network" if you will, because they were all keeping the same beat. A sort of "TON ton ton TON ton ton TON ton TON ton ton".... like a flamenco dancer doing sevillanas(sp?)

anyhoo, I bring it up because I was at my cousins house this weekend, and she still had some from our trip last year, and it made me homesick. (No, Im not japanese. I plan on living there though. if only for the candy.)

has anyone else tried this ?

OMG -- my friend brought some really yummy snacks from Japan. It's in a cute box w/ all these minature individually wrapped up white chocolate w/ black sesame seeds. Yummy stuff.

I tried to do some research online but I didn't find the exact same product but I found something similar to the box that looks like it's from Pocky.

I have to stop by at the Japanese grocery stores to see if I can find it.

Tell me what you think if you've tried it already.

Anyone with a decent microwave can make these fancy rice crispy treats. Follow the recipie on the box...reserve a few marshmellows for garnish and cut them in halves. Cut the rice crispy treat bars into rectangles and make a middle layer with peanut butter..easy. Put a marshmallow half on top of the bar. Melt a chocolate candy bar. Drizzle a chocolate stripe over the marshmallow and down the sides to form the "seaweed". Don't forget to use wax paper underneath to control the mess. This can be very messy and fingerlicken good; an easy cheesy dessert. Good luck.

May favorite at this point seems to be the Ochazuke Wakame which has seaweed and the little rice cracker balls. Is anyone else into this stuff?

Does anyone know where to get men's pocky? I can't find it in the U.S. It's the pretzels dipped in dark chocolate. I guess that the women there can only handle milk chocolate, hence the name Men's Pocky.

MMM I am looking for any place that sells the little thumb-sized conjac jelly cups with lychee inside. I love those things, only problem is in San Jose a couple children choked to death on them and the treats have been banned from the stores.

Akon Snack ANGER!

Well I went down to Akon in dallas (Anime convention) expecting some good snacking, neat costumes and unwashed fan boys. Well I got the last 2 just fine.

Most of the snack dealers there had all the same stock. A couple of common pocky, some melon snacks, a pretz or 2......and Ramune. Coming out their freaking ears. I scouerd booth after booth looking for some Pocari Sweat but no.......the closest I can was some Calpis. But everyone sure had Ramune damnit. That stuff is vile. It's like the Orbitz of Japan. Cute butt plug shaped bottle with a novel opener, and tastes like swill.

Arg....ok bitterness aside. I did find some Pudding Marshmalos. (pudding inside yummy) and some plum pretz. Some rice crackers here and there (my fav) but way over priced, though thats to be expected.

/rant over

Ramen Noodles Go Upscale

By NATALIE OBIKO PEARSON
Associated Press Writer

TOKYO — Customers with Prada handbags and Gucci sunglasses sometimes stand in line for hours and gaze hungrily at a TV outside the restaurant door, feasting their eyes on the delicacy that awaits: a bowl of noodles. The humble noodle — known in Japan as "ramen" — has long been better known as a staple of construction workers and penny-pinching students than as a favorite of the chic.
But in a push to win over a new clientele, Japanese noodles are going upscale with special pork and organic vegetables served in eateries with fetching dark-wood interiors and soft lighting.
One company even came up with a shocker for anyone who's slurped down a calorie-packed bowl of noodles: diet ramen made from seaweed extracts. It weighs in at a meager 8 calories.
"The 'stylish ramen' stores have really boomed," said Masahiko Ichiyanagi, who writes a "ramen column" for a popular weekly magazine, Tokyo 1Week. "The result is that it's now recognized as a legitimate leisure activity."
The trend reaches extremes at Shiodome Ramen, a spanking new cluster of steel-and-glass towers next to — but a world away from — the decidedly lowbrow Shimbashi district.
The shop aims to create a splash. Nippon Television Network Corp. began a highly publicized nationwide contest in 2002 to seek out the country's best ramen cook, and put the winner — Konosuke Takewaka — in charge of the restaurant on its premises.
The exposure brought in the crowds. Customers sometimes waited in line a foot-aching four hours when the restaurant opened Aug. 1. Now, waits of over an hour are still common.
Those with endurance are rewarded. Takewaka strains the noodles by whipping an acorn-shaped sieve through the air in a dramatic figure-eight, splashing scalding water against a window between the kitchen and the restaurant and drawing gasps from startled diners.
"I went through thousands of trials to make the soup we serve today," Takewaka said.
The broth gets its flavor from pork, beef and chicken stock, squid legs and dried fish, he said. The restaurant, which serves 800 bowls a day starting at $7.30, closes when it runs out of its pungent noodle soup.
The highbrow attention is quite a turnaround for the humble dish.
According to popular lore, ramen was introduced by Chinese immigrants early last century. Taking root in major port cities like Yokohama, it soon spread across the country and assumed regional variations. Today, it's as Japanese as tofu or miso soup.
In Japan, ramen shops have long been dingy joints, their counters crowded with chopsticks, seasonings and self-service water jugs.
The fare until now has been straightforward: noodles in a salty broth, topped with a few slices of pork, chopped green onions and strips of seaweed. Standard flavors are salt, soy sauce and miso bean paste.
The search for the perfect bowl of ramen was immortalized in Juzo Itami's 1985 gourmand movie classic "Tampopo"; The Shin Yokohama Raumen Museum near Tokyo gets 120,000 visitors a year — about 15,000 more than Japan's largest collection of art.
The popularity translates into earnings. There are some 200,000 ramen shops in Japan, where customers slurp down an estimated $6.36 billion worth of noodles annually.
Even the financial world is interested. Japanese online brokerage Traders Securities launched a fund in December seeking $1.8 million to invest in a noodle complex in Tokyo.
But for all the bells and whistles, ramen lovers say the key ingredients remain the same: a signature soup and good noodles.
Jun Yoshizawa, an engineering student, recently sat at a noodle stand set up in view of Tokyo's Sumida River, where red lanterns cast their reflection across the water and steam from the hot cauldrons wafted into the evening air.
"Ramen is so tasty because it's so simple — it's like eating something homemade, except the ambiance is better," he said.

Anyone ever try Toppo? I just got introduced to them last week. They're long biscuits like pocky but, they're filled with icing instead of being dipped. I had sesame cracker filled with chocolate. Really good.

I think its interesting that asian cookies come in so many filled types like Koala Yummies etc. I remember a north american attempt to market filled cookies in that style but, it never really took off.

is there enough interest in ramen here? it's kind of a meal but i group it into snacks cause i eat it all the time. what's your favorite?

mine is the ringer hut soy flavored, sold in the refrigerated section at asian supermarkets.
the trick is to drain the ramen before adding the broth (premixed, hot water and flavoring) rather than dump the seasoning into the dirty ramenwater. trust me. mmmmm

these are actually pretty nasty. heavy taste of rancid oil, and a bad fake chocolate flavour. but the little devils get me everytime. they look like chopped up sections of a colon...yes, chocolate colons. gross out your friends today!

Engrish

Have you ever picked up one of your favorite Asian snack foods and sat down to read the packaging only to be perplexed by the words presented to you? Some times the translation from the snack food's native tongue to the package in your hand is not always perfect but often times this can be very entertaining. This is Engrish. A good example comes from a bag of Ginger Candy from the Cheng Chia Chen Co. in Taiwan that I picked up last night. The back of the package reads (taken word for word with spelling mistakes and all):

This product, dispatcheo from the factory, has an exact control in quality and a good packing in case it is overdue or has turned caused by incorrect keeping, you can substitute the new for the bad directly at the store where you punchased it. However, you may mail it to our company, we are ready to you for a new one. Thanks for your kind patronage.

I'm looking forward to seeing other great examples of Engrish.

I'm sorry, this post has nothing to do with the theme of this tribe, but I was wondering if any Asian-Americans could help me out by taking two minutes to complete a survey. You can take it if you're not Asian as well, as long as you have some interest in Asia.

http://www.journeyintoasia.org /survey.php

The purpose of the survey is to better understand what Asian Americans are interested in and concerned with.
thnx.
I really appreciate it!

Botan Rice Candy

Do you like it or not? I don't care for the stuff because I can't get past the slimey blobs that form in your mouth when the rice paper melts but the taste is nice if not subtle, and the color is most aesthetically pleasing.

I once introduced a roommate to it and she ate three boxes in one sitting. We became concerned when we decided we had no idea what the ingredients were, as ingredients are rarely listed ingredients on imported food products. There was a 800 number for the importing company so we called and left a message just for fun. No, we had not been smoking anything that would have made us paranoid or compelled one of us to consume three boxes of Botan Rice Candy with reckless abandon.
Anyway, the importer responded in a timely fashion via postal mail with a full dossier of ingredients and nutritional information. What a gas. Ever wonder what you are really eating?

just finished a bottle of kirin ice milk tea. but i'm a bit curious about this particular type.

the english translation sticker says "soft drink: gogono kocha milk tea"...'afternoon cold milk tea? or is this translation a bit askew?

the only ingredients listed are water, sugar, skim milk powder and "tea". i really would like to know what kind of "tea" they're using, coz it tastes quite different and refreshingly fruitier than mst milk teas i've tried.

any clues?

having spent my formative years (2-5) in japan, i was wearing a kimono and eating with chopsticks very early on. although i love all asian food, korean is now my absolute favorite cuisine and we eat it once a week. the restaurant we go to also happens to have fab sushi at reasonable prices so we always eat sushi w/our korean food. here's my question: you get all these little side dishes (seaweed, kim chi, sesame beansprouts, dried crab, smoked fishies, soybeans?, potatoes in a drk sauce, etc.) what are those called? is there a broad name for the collective of "tidbits" as i like to call them, or are they identified by each individual's items name? anyway, what KILLS me is when i see all these goofballs order their korean and leave all those delicious snackies untouched!! what a waste!! i am hoping answers my question ... snack on.

Ever try the gum with in the green packaging with a happy little white frog on it? The gum is white, a little chalky end tastes like erasers from planet juicy-juice, it is also very, very soft when chewed, not at all like the rubbery stuff we masticate in the US. So delicious.
The inside of each wrapper has an ink tattoo of varying characters, you can lick, stick and transfer, they are blobby and run, so they look more like a bruise when you are done (the ink is always red/blue). I can't remember the name of the gum and haven't been able to find it in years. Anyone seen it?

Hiya, I just can't get enough of imported snackfood. I don't even go to the snackfood aisle at my local grocery because I know I'll be making a trip to an asian market to stock up on snacks.

I'm hoping there are others out there who share this interest, and that we can trade recommendation, and tips about what to avoid.

Here, I'll start:

Ramune, anyone ever had this Japanese soda pop? It comes in the most ingeniously designed bottle one could possibly imagine. One friend of mine describes the taste as "cream soda 2000". It has spawned a whole slew of imitators, and a line of candies and gums which "fizz" when you chew them.
